My paintings, prints, drawings, photos, performances and three-dimensional artworks are representations of chaos. They are in some respects the cause and sometimes the evidence of turbulence, and passionately disclose duality’s character. Turbulence is majestically sublime, horrendous, and terrifying but respectable too.
Order subdues the virtue of fluctuation.
Fluctuation is an even process and from time to time life, or even eras, sometimes turn into chaos or turbulence; the chaos and turbulence explain themselves, or comment on and give different views of life itself, while absorbing influence, power, dynamism for the next whirl. Paroxysms of turbulence might be the metaphor of art; then art might be nothing else then formulation of chaos, or “fluctuations” in this order.

The great “chaotics” Bosch, Grünewald, Blake, and Turner and the 20th Century’s turbulence riders Schiele, Pollock, and Bacon, appropriated and made chaos acceptable - even domesticating it. I create time and space layers in my art. These works are spiritual and technical interpretations, palimpsest and remixed; I used a wide variety of materials to create my artworks; old lexicons, golf clubs, e blades, wax, metal saws, cans, my ballerina daughter’s worn pointe shoes......
Steven Balogh lives and works in New York City.
He was born in Hungary, Europe. In 1980 he had his first one-man show in Budapest, and many more followed. In 1986 he spent seven months in an Austrian refugee camp, and in 1987 moved to New York City where he has lived ever since. His early years has always been politically and socially conscious and involved with his times and surroundings.
In 2018 he had solo show at Gallery MC, Manhattan, New York City. In 2016 he had a long running solo show at Artspace PS.109, Grady Alexis Gallery in New York City. His art is collected internationally in museums and private collections.
